Dear Parents: Chapter 9- My tomato plant died and it was because of me…

Dear Parents,

tomato-plant

Growing up, I was blessed with a garden in front of my house…not in Singapore, but in Indonesia.

My dad graduated with a degree in agriculture. Naturally, our garden was lush, filled with flowers and fruit plants. My favourite was the tomato plant.

Tomato is not my favourite food, but there is something about the plant that intrigues me from the small yellow flower blooming into a huge red tomato 🍅 to the hairy stems and leaves 🌿 for adaptation.

I started growing my own tomato plant here in Singapore.

The flowers started to bloom, just like those i had seen in my childhood memories.

But things took a turn for the worse. Leaves turned yellow, despite seemingly sufficient water and sunlight. Flowers wilted, leaving no fruit behind. The plant bent and stem broke. I didn’t give up, tried to mend it as much as possible but nothing seems to work. It was dying.

One day, my wife and I decided to end its life. With a heavy heart, i pulled it out of the pot. The soil was full of roots so much as if it was trying to grow out of the pot, screaming for more space which I didn’t know and hence didn’t give it a bigger pot.

Can’t help but think of its similarity with our growing children. All are born with their own unique gifts.. Yet, at times, we turn a blind eye and we don’t give them enough space, time and freedom to develop their potential.

Children need to be given ample opportunities for them to expand and develop their gifts.

The last thing we want is for their gifts to turn into wasted potential just like my tomato plant that didn’t make it.

How are you growing your tomato plant🪴?

With Love,

Teacher Deddy
