Dear Parents: Chapter 8- Lessons Learnt from the Netflix series “The Playlist” – the story behind Spotify

Dear Parents,

netfix

I have recently been quite hooked on this Netflix series, “The Playlist” where my wife and I will watch it over dinner.

Well, it is not because we pay our monthly subscription fee to Spotify (and we have no plan to cancel it) and would like to find out more about the company, but because the dramatization of the story behind this music streaming service is truly educational.. Of course, only if you look deeper into it.

From the story of Daniel Ek who started Spotify, there are 3 key takeaways that we can all learn in helping our children/students maneuver their way in the technological world:

First, have a low threshold to problem.

Daniel Ek, just like many others, found it so painful to have to illegally download his favourite songs from Pirate Bay each time, so painful that he wanted to do something to stop the pain. So it is important to let our children experience problems in their life. Instead of sheltering them, we should equip them with the right skillset and encourage them to create solution to stop the pain.

Second, be extremely open minded about new ways of doing things.

Initially, the music industry leaders looked at Spotify with disdain because they were fixated on a single way of listening to music and they couldn’t wrap their minds around providing music for free. It was only until they realized that Daniel Ek has no interest in letting the future destroy the past, but they want to take the past and combine it with something new that they are open to the freemium model.

Third, don’t settle for as-is, if there is a better what-if.

Daniel Ek was not satisfied with the amount of delay Spotify took to run play a song from a single search. Honestly, it was already fast but he did not want to accept things as-is, he wanted the coders to imagine the what-if it can be even faster. That pushes the coders almost to the brink of giving up but they managed to think innovatively and made it even faster.

With Love,

Teacher Deddy
