Student Spotlight: Winners of Scratch Coder Kode It, Sparkies! (April-June Edition)

Introducing Kode It, Sparkies!

As part of our Scratch Coder curriculum, we tasked our students with designing unique and meaningful games through Scratch, a kid-friendly, block-based programming platform. Kode It, Sparkies!’s purpose is not only to identify distinguished coders within cohorts but more so to put our students’ learning to the test with real-world applications.

Our students were given the freedom to choose their problem statements to work on and create games that are not only creative and interactive but also meaningful to them.

So, let us take a look at some of our students’ finest creations!

Kaden, 13 years old, winner of Kode It, Sparkies! – Scratch Coder

Drawing inspiration from his favourite game, Natural Disaster Survival – a round-based survival game on the Roblox platform, Kaden decided to create his own rendition of a survival game to help its players to familiarise themselves with key survival tips during disasters.

MISSION! – Avoid all collapsing debris!

The game starts off with a normal day until… an earthquake strikes! The players are tasked to avoid any debris caused by the earthquake and to find their way to a strong object to prevent getting hit. Through this stage, players will be able to understand what they are supposed to do indoors during an earthquake.

MISSION! – Test your knowledge!

After a few more survival stages, successful players will be brought into the final stage where they are being put to a test on disaster survival tips as a recap on the learning points that Kaden has brilliantly taught through his game!

Using what he had learnt throughout the course on the various components of block-based coding, Kaden was able to complete his first ever game all on own his own! – Kudos to you Kaden! We hope you are enjoying this version of Disaster Survival more!

Joey, 13 years old, winner of Kode It, Sparkies! – Scratch Coder

Having witnessed occasions of cyberbullying and the horrific impacts on the bullied, Joey felt a need to spread awareness on the topic, its common signs, and even some advice for those in need. And with her newly found passion and skill set, Joey decided to create an educational game in hopes to help the bullied out there as well as educate bullies on the negative impacts that their actions can have on their victims.

Examples of Cyberbullying

Joey first shows a common form of cyberbullying – sending hate messages over messaging platforms to inflict negative emotions on the victim. And with that scene, Joey also wanted to convey the message that not defending the victims is also a form of bullying and that words itself are powerful enough to affect another person.

Sharing tips on how to protect yourself as a victim

Joey even shared some tips on what to do when a victim experiences cyberbullying such as standing up for yourself, ignoring the bullies, and keeping paper trails of all occurrences. Even though these tips aren’t sure-fire ways to stop bullying, they can definitely help in one’s case when seeking help from adults and authorities!

We applaud Joey for her excellent research skills and for developing a game that we believe, will truly make a difference in someone’s life! We are proud of you Joey!

Tristan, 9 years old, winner of Kode It, Sparkies! – Scratch Coder

Tristan LOVES nature (as you can see from his picture that was taken during his last trip), as such, he spends lots of time learning about it and quickly realized that Mother Earth is in danger due to Global Warming.

Tristan was motivated to create a game that educates the world on the adverse effects of deforestation and industrialisation, some of the factors that make up global warming. In hopes to save the Earth and stop global warming and improving the quality of life for everyone.

The game starts off with a short introduction scene leading up to the home page where players can choose to read instructions on the gameplay or to start the game. Tristan created 2 main stages – “Melting Icebergs” and “Sneaky Factory”, with each its own mini-stages.

Game instructions and “melting iceberg” stages

In the “melting iceberg” stages, Tristan wished to convey the impact of Deforestation – how it affects the Earth’s temperature, causing icebergs to melt, and wildlife to suffer because of the changes to their natural habitat.

Players are taken on a journey through the North Pole where they have to avoid the freezing waters and obtain food along the way!

“Sneaky Factory” stages

After cruising through the “melting icebergs” stages, players are hit with another task – to gather food in a newly built factory along the freezing waters. In these stages, players have to avoid razor-sharp blades in order to obtain food.

Tristan wished to educate its players on the negative effects of Industrialisation – how it pollutes the environment, forcing wildlife to sought for alternatives to food sources, and even migrating to a whole new environment.

What a fun and engaging game Tristan! Well done! We are so touched by your love for Nature. Surprise us with your future projects!

Congratulations to all of our students who completed their Scratch Coder course from April to June! We are excited to see your future creations!
