What is the Hwa Chong Infocomm Challenge?

The Hwa Chong Infocomm Challenge (HCIC) is a highly esteemed national coding competition organized annually by Hwa Chong Institution. Open to Primary 6 students, the competition is designed to push the boundaries of young minds in the field of info-communications. HCIC serves as a prestigious platform for youth to showcase their talents in robotics, programming, and coding, inspiring the next generation of tech innovators.

Interview with Teacher Deddy, Co-Founder of Kodecoon Academy

Q: What would you say to aspiring students who want to reach the same level of success?

A: Start small, but start now. Don’t wait until you feel “ready.” Get your hands dirty with coding projects, be okay with failure, and always ask questions. And most importantly, have fun with it! The best coders I’ve taught are the ones who are always tinkering, experimenting, and enjoying the process.

Q: How does Kodecoon keep students motivated throughout such a demanding preparation process?

A: It’s all about building momentum and celebrating small wins. Our instructors set clear goals for the students and consistently recognise their progress. We also ensure that lessons are connected to real-world applications or engaging challenges. When students see how their skills can be used to solve real problems, or even build something fun, they naturally stay motivated and enthusiastic.

Q: What do you think are the biggest benefits students gain from participating in competitions like HCIC?

A: There’s so much students take away from an experience like HCIC. Of course, they sharpen their coding skills, but just as importantly, they learn how to think critically, manage their time under pressure, and work well with others. These are skills that go way beyond the classroom and really prepare them for bigger challenges ahead.

And honestly, doing well in HCIC can make a real difference, especially for students thinking about DSA. For those aiming to get into Hwa Chong, a strong performance in this competition can really help them stand out and often gives them a better shot at getting through to the interview stage. It’s a great way to showcase both their technical ability and their drive.

Q: If my child is unsure whether to join the HCIC prep class or just practise independently, what would your advice be?

A: Practising past year papers is definitely a good start, but it’s important to understand that those exact questions won’t appear again. At Kodecoon, our instructors are trained to identify key concepts and repeating themes that HCIC tends to test year after year.

We go beyond surface-level practice. We provide students with a wide range of carefully designed questions and focus on helping them truly understand the underlying concepts. HCIC problems can be tricky; they often take familiar ideas and twist them in unexpected ways. Simply memorising answers, or worse, memorising answer keys won’t be enough. Students need to grasp the why and how behind each solution.

Most importantly, our prep class simulates the actual competition environment. We run mock tests under timed conditions, with peers from the same age group. This helps students build confidence, manage stress, and get used to the pressure they’ll face on the real day. That kind of preparation makes a big difference.
