Dear Parents: Chapter 6: One of our students went into ICU. Her body was weak but her mind was strong.

Dear Parents,

intensive-care-unit

I was dumbfounded to receive a text from a mum who was planning to pause her daughter’s coding journey with us. Not because she has not done well for her exams or her schedule got too packed, but because she had been admitted to the ICU.

It was unfortunate because I just saw the student a few days back in my class and she was perfectly fine. We paused her class and her DSA preparation because of course, health comes first, nothing else matters at that point in time.

Thanks to the brilliant doctors and nurses, she was soon discharged from ICU and put to bed rest for monitoring. While her body was extremely weak, her mind was still strong and she didn’t call it quit. Admittedly, I may have thought of letting the DSA preparation go to prioritize her health, but it wasn’t the case for her.

While she may be laying down on the bed letting her body fight, her mind was also planning to fight. The very moment when she felt better, she started working through her DSA portfolio on her hospital bed and created her own website to chronicle and reflect on her entire coding journey. She didn’t want to give up, not even toying with the idea.

From this incident, I realise that it was never a question of skill set, it is the mindset of a child that truly differentiates. That no matter how many obstacles the world may throw at them, the right mindset will bring them up to fight on and push them through to achieve what they think  they deserve.
